Gadget Lab editor Dylan Tweney is posing the question: What is the perfect phone to tether an iPad?

Like me, Tweney is an iPhone and iPad owner, and we’ve been having this discussion offline for months, like Vladimir and Estragon, with about the same results. He’s tired of waiting — hence the attempt to crowdsource an answer on the off-chance we haven’t thought of something.

But the fact that this power user of  … everything is having issues in his connected life in what has to be the golden age of gadgets and digital tech strikes me as extraordinary.

To be fair, this is something of a convoluted problem exacerbated by the business models of Apple and AT&T, which conspire to require users of iOS devices to pay separately for connectivity on each device. No multidevice discounts. No tethering without an upcharge or without hacking your iPhone in a way that voids your warranty and still isn’t for the technologically meek.

But this very new dilemma begs the question: Are we at the dawn of an age in which tablets will become the jewel in your gadget crown, eclipsing the mighty smartphone only a few years into its reign?

There are a couple of truisms at play here. Our brains get wired bit by bit — you couldn’t possibly understand a fax machine without first knowing what a telephone is. And, every advancement creates the conditions for revealing or introducing new problems.

We know, for example, that Apple worked on a tablet first but shelved it to make the iPhone. The iPhone was revolutionary in many ways, but it was not paradigmatic — there were other feature and smartphones already out there. There were also plenty of stabs at tablets, none of which caught the world’s imagination.

But look at what happened. The iPhone greased the skids for the iPad, which came three years later. One of the pitches for the iPad was “you already know how it works.” One of the criticisms was that it was just a bigger iPhone — or rather iPod, since it is not a mobile phone. And now Apple has re-introduced the MacBook Air, the most moribund device in their portable line that suddenly makes more sense (especially the 11-inch model) as something very much like an iPad, with the “missing” keyboard.

And having both an iPhone and an iPad has exposed the shortcomings of what was once called “the Jesus Phone.”

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg appears to have been outed as not caring one whit about your privacy — a jarring admission, considering how much of our personal data Facebook owns, not to mention its plans to become the web’s central repository for our preferences and predilections.

Also interesting is how this came about: Not in a proper article, but in a tweet by Nick Bilton, lead technology blogger for the The New York Times‘ Bits Blog, based on a conversation he says was “off the record” and which he may have confused with “not for attribution.”

“Off record chat w/ Facebook employee,” begins Bilton’s fateful tweet. “Me: How does Zuck feel about privacy? Response: [laughter] He doesn’t believe in it.”

Ouch.

Zuckerberg’s apparent disregard for your privacy is probably not reason enough to delete your Facebook account. But we wouldn’t recommend posting anything there that you wouldn’t want marketers, legal authorities, governments (or your mother) to see, especially as Facebook continues to push more and more of users’ information public and even into the hands of other companies, leaving the onus on users to figure out its Rubik’s Cube-esque privacy controls.

Facebook has been on a relentless request over the past six months to become the center of identity and connections online. The site unilaterally decided last December that much of a user’s profile information, including the names of all their friends and the things they were “fans” of, would be public information — no exceptions or opt-outs allowed.

Zuckerberg defended the change — largely intended to keep up with the publicness of Twitter, saying that people’s notions of privacy were changing. He took no responsibility for being the one to drag many Facebook users into the net’s public sphere.

Then last week at its f8 conference, Facebook announced it was sending user profile information in bulk to companies like Yelp, Pandora and Microsoft. Thus, when users show up at those sites while logged in to Facebook, they see personalized versions of the those services (unless the user opts out of each site, somewhere deep in the bowels of Facebook’s privacy control center). On Tuesday, four Senators asked the company to only push data to third-parties if users agree to it, a so-called “opt-in” that social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and Google Buzz eschew since it radically cuts down on participation and thus revenues.

Facebook is also pushing a “Like” button, which lets sites put little Facebook buttons on anything from blog entries to T-shirts in web stores.

Clicking that button sends that information to Facebook, which publishes it as part of what it calls the Open Graph, linking your identity to things you choose online. That information, in turn, is shared with whatever sites Facebook chooses to share it with — and to the sites you’ve allowed to access your profile.

It’s an ambitious attempt to rewrite the web as a socially linked network. But many see Facebook’s move as trying to colonize the rest of the web, and keep all this valuable information in its data silos, in order to become a force on the web that rivals Google.

So it’s no laughing matter that the head of Facebook appears not to care about privacy. (We asked Facebook to clarify Zuckerberg’s privacy stance but have yet to hear back.)

For his part, Bilton fired off a number of salvos defending his understanding of the the ground rules which governed the conversation he had. “‘Off record’ means there is no attribution to who it is but conversation can be used in story. ‘On background’ means I can not repeat it,” wrote Bilton. He took over the Times‘ technology blog in the last few months, after a long stint working with its technology-development team.Unfortunately, he’s wrong about the definitions.

“‘Off the record’ restricts the reporter from using the information the source is about to deliver,” reads NYU’s Journalism Handbook, in one definition of the phrase. “If the reporter can confirm the information with another source who doesn’t insist on speaking off the record (whether that means he agreed to talking on the record, on background, or not for attribution), he can publish it.” “On background” usually means that information can be used, but can’t be attributed to a specific person.

Bilton later responded to our request for clarification, saying, “My source said it was OK to quote them, just not say who they are.” So apparently, this Facebook employee wanted this information to get out, for whatever reason.

Now, the die has been cast: The world knows that a Facebook employee thinks his CEO “doesn’t believe in” privacy, which should scare the bejesus out of anyone with a Facebook account — and that encompasses just about everyone reading this now.

Elizabeth Edwards, a best-selling author and the driving force behind husband John Edwards' political career before it was destroyed by his infidelity, has died of cancer. She was 61.

Gravely ill with cancer that no longer responded to treatment, Elizabeth Edwards was reportedly not in any pain and was surrounded at home in North Carolina by family and friends, including her estranged husband, a former Democratic presidential candidate.

Her death came at 10:15 Tuesday morning, according to a family friend. The scene was described as "very peaceful."

The friend said, "Elizabeth did not want people to say she lost her battle with cancer. The battle was about living a good life and that she won."

Family friends provided NBC News with this statement from the Edwards family:

"Elizabeth Anania Edwards, mother, author, advocate, died today at her home in Chapel Hill, surrounded by her family.

"Today we have lost the comfort of Elizabeth's presence but she remains the heart of this family.

"We love her and will never know anyone more inspiring or full of life. 

"On behalf of Elizabeth we want to express our gratitude to the thousands of kindred spirits who moved and inspired her along the way. Your support and prayers touched our entire family.

"In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wade Edwards Foundation which benefits the Wade Edwards Learning Lab." The Edwards' son Wade died in a car accident at age 16 in 1996.

When news began to circulate that Elizabeth had taken a turn for the worse and her cancer had spread to her liver, her family announced Monday that her doctors had recommended against any additional treatment. 

"She found out last week and is at peace with where she is right now,” PEOPLE magazine’s Sandra Westfall told TODAY co-anchor Matt Lauer Tuesday before Elizabeth passed away. “She has a home full of relatives, which is how she always wanted it. They are telling stories, looking at old photos, and having as many laughs as tears.”

John Edwards, from whom Elizabeth Edwards separated last year after he acknowledged fathering a child with a former aide to his unsuccessful vice presidential campaign, was with his wife and their three children: Cate, 28; Emma Claire, 12; and Jack, 10.

During an appearance on TODAY last year, Elizabeth Edwards said that while it was difficult not to be able to “lean” on the man she once called “my rock,” she thought it was important to not shut him out.

“For the children she’s put on a brave face, and kept that relationship intact. He’s at the house this week, helping with the children, getting takeout for the family that is visiting,” Westfall said.

"I have found that in the simple act of living with hope, and in the daily effort to have a positive impact in the world, the days I do have are made all the more meaningful and precious," Elizabeth Edwards wrote before her death.

Agreeing with Lauer that it must be a difficult time for the children, Westfall said Elizabeth Edwards has been preparing them for her death for some time.

“She, years ago, starting writing a ‘dying letter,’ she called it, so she would have the advice to pass on and always be there with a mother's wisdom when she couldn’t be there physically,” Westfall said.

Elizabeth Edwards wrote two best-selling books, "Resilience" and "Saving Graces," about her long battle with cancer and the scandal surrounding her husband.

Reactions from leaders The news of Elizabeth Edwards' death brought messages of condolences and sympathy from around the country. In a statement, Vice President Joe Biden said, "Elizabeth Edwards fought a brave battle against a terrible, ravaging disease that takes too many lives every day. She was an inspiration to all who knew her, and to those who felt they knew her."

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she was deeply saddened by Edwards' death.

"America has lost a passionate advocate for building a more humane and just society, for reforming our health-care system, and for finding a cure for cancer once and for all," Clinton said in a statement. "But the Edwards family and her legion of friends have lost so much more — a loving mother, constant guardian, and wise counselor.

"Our thoughts are with the Edwards family at this time, and with all those people across the country who met Elizabeth over the years and found an instant friends — someone who shared their experiences and offered empathy, understanding and hope."

North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr, a Republican who won the Senate seat previously held by John Edwards in 2008, called Elizabeth Edwards "a passionate advocate for issues she believed in" and "a caring and loving mother."

 "Her legacy should serve as an inspiration to all of us," Burr said. "Her life was not without tragedy and adversity, yet through it all she fought for her family and faced every challenge with courage, poise and grace."

World News : Japan launches Akatsuki probe to Venus

[ BBC ]. Japan has sent a sophisticated probe to Venus to study its atmosphere in unprecedented detail.

The Akatsuki orbiter was put on a path to the inner-world by an H-IIA rocket launched from the Tanegashima spaceport in the south of the country.

The vehicle left its pad at precisely 2158 GMT (0658 local time Friday).

Akatsuki will arrive at Venus in December. Key goals include finding definitive evidence for lightning and for active volcanoes.

It was the H-IIA's second attempt at a launch. A previous effort earlier in the week was aborted because of a thick covering of cloud at the Tanegashima facility.

Thursday's get-away, by contrast, was made into a bright sky. The 53m-high rocket climbed south-east over the Pacific Ocean, its lift-off timed to the second to make sure Atkatsuki picked up the correct trajectory to make it out to Venus.

The H-IIA vehicle had a busy flight. It also deployed five piggy-back experiments, including a small satellite to practise the technique of sailing on sunlight.

Once Akatsuki gets to Venus, it will not be alone. The probe will conduct joint observations with a European Space Agency craft - Venus Express - that arrived at the planet in 2006.

Planetary comparisons

Venus is almost identical in size to our planet, and is thought to have a similar composition. But there the resemblance ends.

A dense, largely carbon dioxide, atmosphere acts as a blanket, trapping incoming solar radiation to heat the planet's surface to an average temperature of 460C (860F).

Surface pressure is about 90 times that on Earth. Several Soviet probes sent to Venus in the 1960s were crushed as they approached the surface.

By studying this hostile world, scientists hope to understand better how a warming future on our own planet might evolve.

"Although Venus is believed to have formed under similar conditions to Earth, it is a completely different world from our planet with extremely high temperatures due to the greenhouse effect of carbon dioxide and a super rotating atmosphere blanketed by thick clouds of sulphuric acid," explained Takeshi Imamura, Akatsuki's project scientist.

"Using [Akatsuki] to investigate the atmosphere of Venus and comparing it with that of Earth, we hope to learn more about the factors determining planetary environments."

Volcano hunt

The thick Venusian atmosphere is opaque to instruments that operate at visible wavelengths and so the Japanese probe carries five cameras that are sensitive in the infrared and ultraviolet parts of the electromagnetic spectrum.

This instrument suite will enable scientists to investigate the clouds layer by layer.

The Japanese team wants to get a better understanding of why Venusian weather systems moves so swiftly.

"On Venus, a high-speed wind called super-rotation is blowing all over the planet, in the direction of planetary rotation, with a velocity reaching 400km per hour at an altitude of around 60km from the surface," explained Dr Imamura.

"This wind blows 60 times faster than the planet's rotation, which is very slow (one full rotation takes 243 Earth days). Akatsuki will investigate why this mysterious phenomenon occurs. Another objective is to study the formation of the thick sulphuric acid clouds that envelop Venus, and to detect lightning on the planet."

Infrared sensitivity can also be used to study surface composition.

Akatsuki will use this capability to try to find active volcanoes.

Europe's Venus Express probe recently found lava flows that could have been younger than 250,000 years old.

Solar 'yacht'

Akatsuki's H-IIA rocket carried aloft a group of smaller satellites, some weighing just a few kilos.

A lot of interest has centred on a solar sail project called Ikaros (Interplanetary Kite-craft Accelerated by Radiation Of the Sun).

In the coming days, this 320kg, 1.6m-wide, disc-shaped spacecraft will deploy an ultra-light membrane.

The pressure of sunlight falling on this thin film should drive the disc out to Venus behind Akatsuki.

This type of "solar sailing" technique has long been touted as a means of moving spacecraft around the Solar System, or even just helping conventional satellites to maintain their orbits more efficiently.

The large sail (14m along the square) will also incorporate solar cells to generate power.

The mission team will be watching to see if Ikaros produces a measurable acceleration, and how well its systems are able to steer the craft through space.

The Ikaros team acknowledges that deploying the large sail and controlling it will be extremely difficult.

"We conducted many experiments on the ground, and also launched the film aboard a sounding rocket," said project leader, Dr Osamu Mori.

"We even sent it high up in the sky in a big balloon, to spread the film in a near-vacuum environment. We experienced many failures, but we kept searching for the most reliable deployment method, and that led us to the model we've now built. I believe it will be successful."

The Orange Bowl 2011 holds the only BCS suspense in their hands. However, the Orange Bowl 2011 matchup is widely expected to include Stanford,

 instead of Connecticut. This seems to be a weird geographical match, since Stanford might be a better fit for the Fiesta at first glance. Yet due to the BCS picking order this year, the decision isn't up to the Cardinal or Huskies. Therefore, the 2011 Orange Bowl gets to decide whether Stanford or Connecticut will play Virginia Tech on January 3.

For most of the year, it seemed that the Orange would pit the ACC champion against the Big East winner. Virginia Tech lived up to their end, by defeating Florida State for the ACC crown yesterday. As for Connecticut, they won their controversial title with a last-second win over South Florida.

However, the Orange Bowl 2011 has another option than a Virginia Tech-UConn match. Stanford is a much more attractive prospect, if only due to their 11-1 record, and likely Heisman runner up Andrew Luck. But as recently as last Friday, it appeared the Cardinal's BCS hopes would be dashed.

Despite their record, the presence of TCU, Boise State, and the other potential at-large teams seemed to knock Stanford from contention. It would have been a big controversy if an 11-1 team, whose only loss was to Oregon, was out of the BCS altogether.

Yet because Boise State lost to Nevada, Stanford had the opening they needed. Now that they are No. 4 in the BCS, they have a guaranteed place in a major bowl. Therefore, the Orange Bowl 2011 can pick them as an opponent for Virginia Tech.

This year's order lets the Orange pick an at-large team before the Fiesta. Therefore, instead of choosing Connecticut, they can go with the Cardinal and relegate the Huskies to the Fiesta instead. With that, they can avoid the controversy and backlash over having a four-loss team involved, and let the Fiesta deal with it.

Letting Stanford in the Orange Bowl 2011 would certainly bring in new blood. The Cardinal haven't been in the BCS in years, and have never been in this game. Yet many have said that Stanford doesn't travel well, and now they would have to go cross-country.

Despite reports that he has a broken foot, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is active and will play tonight against the Ravens.

Boy, I didn't see that one coming.

Roethlisberger's status for this crucial game between AFC North foes was never really in doubt, even as reports of his foot injury escalated and the injury was called a break and not a sprain.

What is in question is how healthy Roethlisberger truly is, and how limited he'll be tonight.

Will he have the same mobility and be able to shrug off tacklers as well as he does when 100 percent healthy? Or will the injury - whatever it is - make Big Ben more of a stationary target for the Ravens to attack?

Roethlisberger just came onto the field to a chorus of boos from Ravens fans. He has what looks like a roll and a half of tape wrapped around the injured right foot.

Russia and Qatar have been chosen to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cup finals respectively after a secret ballot of Fifa's 22 executive members in Zurich.

Russia was selected ahead of co-bidders Spain-Portugal and Holland-Belgium and England, which won only two votes.

Qatar defeated bids from South Korea, Japan, Australia and the United States.

"You have entrusted us with the Fifa World Cup for 2018 and I can promise you will never regret it," said Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov.

Russia received nine votes in the first round of voting and an outright majority of 13 in the second round, while Qatar obtained an outright majority of 14 in the fourth round of voting for 2022.

It is the first time that either Russia or Qatar has been chosen as host nation for the World Cup.

"Let us make history together," Shuvalov added.

Russia's selection comes despite the absence of Prime Minister Valdimir Putin from the vote in Switzerland.

The 58-year-old had been expected to be a prominent figurehead for the Russian bid in the final days of campaigning but instead remained in Moscow.

He is now expected to fly to Zurich to thank Fifa for what he described as "a sign of trust" for his country.

"Russia loves football, Russia knows what football is and in our country we have everything to conduct the 2018 World Cup on a very worthy level," said Putin in a televised interview.

"The decision corresponds with Fifa's philosophy for developing football, especially in those regions of the world where that development is needed."

Qatar's Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani was in attendance in Zurich, and he thanked Fifa for "believing in change".

"We have worked very hard over past two years to get to this point," Al-Thani continued. "Today we celebrate, but tomorrow, the work begins.

"We acknowledge there is a lot of work for us to do, but we also stand by our promise that we will deliver."

2018 VOTING 1st round: England 2 (eliminated), Netherlands-Belgium 4; Spain-Portugal 7; Russia 9 2nd round: Netherlands-Belgium 2; Spain-Portugal 7; Russia 13 (Russia obtain absolute majority)

The Spain-Portugal 2018 bid gained seven votes and its managing director Miguel Angel Lopez commented: "Fifa thought it was better to promote football in other latitudes and there we are. The decision is focused on taking football to regions which have never held a World Cup."

The Belgium-Netherlands bid picked up four votes in the first round and two in the second. Former Belgian star Marc Wilmots thought the decision was a negative one for football.

"Russia is a political choice and Qatar is an economic choice," Wilmots reflected. "You can say that to some extent the sport has been the loser with the decision for these two World Cups."

US President Barack Obama said he felt Fifa had made "the wrong decision" in awarding the 2022 tournament to Qatar.

The US reached the fourth round of voting before being beaten by Russia and US 2022 bid chairman Sunil Gulati stated: "We're disappointed. No way to get around that. We worked very hard.

"The country has been behind us in a way we haven't seen. We know it came down to two. Which automatically means it was very close.

"But there's a lot of countries in the world that want to host these events.

"People have figured out a way to do it and not lose a lot of money, especially if you don't have infrastructure issues.

"Certainly in the two winners today there are going to be a lot of infrastructure needs and commitments have been made by the governments."

Despite losing out in the first round of voting for 2022, Australia's Football Federation chief executive Ben Buckley thought the Australian bid had strengthened his country's reputation.

"We are obviously disappointed at the outcome in Zurich, however we are proud of the efforts we made in trying to secure a World Cup in Australia," Buckley added.

"We mounted a technically excellent, credible and responsible bid against enormous competition and this strong bid has delivered important benefits.

"Australia's reputation as a potential host for such a major event has been reinforced."

Whistleblower website WikiLeaks has been kicked off Amazon.com’s U.S. servers after moving its operations just a day ago.

The move by Amazon comes after questioning from U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman, the chairman of the House Security Committee.

“This morning Amazon informed my staff that it has ceased to host the Wikileaks website,” Sen. Lieberman said in a statement.

“I wish that Amazon had taken this action earlier based on Wikileaks’ previous publication of classified material. The company’s decision to cut off Wikileaks now is the right decision and should set the standard for other companies Wikileaks is using to distribute its illegally seized material.”

WikiLeaks has been the center of attention this week due to its release of more than 250,000 sensitive U.S. diplomatic cables. As a result, the U.S. government has been stepping up pressure against the website, which has also been the target of multiple distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks.

Yesterday, in an attempt to thwart the DDoS attacks, WikiLeaks moved its operations from its Swedish servers to Amazon Web Services, the e-commerce giant’s cloud computing and hosting platform. That didn’t even last for a day though; the whistleblower website is once again hosted on its Swedish servers.

Amazon isn’t saying why it kicked WikiLeaks to the curb. While it could have been to protect its servers from inevitable DDoS attacks, we suspect pressure from the U.S. government probably had something to do with it.

That’s not the only problem plaguing it, either. Yesterday, founder Julian Assange was placed on Interpol’s wanted list for sex crimes he’s accused of committing in Sweden.

Interpol, at the request of a Swedish court looking into alleged sex crimes from earlier this year, has put WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on its most-wanted list.

The Stockholm Criminal Court two weeks ago issued an international arrest warrant for Assange on probable cause, saying he is suspected of rape, sexual molestation and illegal use of force in August incidents.

Sweden asked Interpol, the international police organization, to post a "Red Notice" after a judge approved a motion to bring him into custody.

The "Red Notice" is not an international arrest warrant. It an advisory and request, issued to 188 member countries "to assist the national police forces in identifying or locating those persons with a view to their arrest and extradition," according to Interpol.

The Swedish court ordered Assange, 39, formally arrested in his absence, which requires Swedish authorities anywhere in the world to detain Assange if they come across him. Sweden's director of prosecutions, Marianne Ny, had requested the arrest-in-absence.

"The background is that he has to be heard in this investigation and we haven't been able to get a hold of him to question him," Ny said at the time.

Assange faces five counts that appear related to two incidents, according to the request Ny filed with the court.

He faces one count of rape and one count of sexual molestation related to an instance around August 17 in Enkoping, just outside Stockholm. He then faces two counts of sexual molestation between August 13 and 18 in Stockholm, and one count of illegal use of force between August 13 and 14, also in the capital.

Assange could be sentenced to at least two years in prison if convicted, according to the document.

Assange, an Australian, was rejected for permanent residency in Sweden in October. Swedish Migration Board official Gunilla Wikstrom said his application failed to fulfill all the requirements but declined to give details.

On Monday, Ecuador invited Assange to come to Quito to discuss documents leaked on the site relating to Ecuador and other Latin American countries, according to a statement from the country's foreign ministry.

The ministry also offered to process a request for residency "in accordance with the country's current laws."

In a November news release, Assange's British lawyer said the sex-crime charges stem from consensual sexual relationships his client had with two women.

"Only after the women became aware of each other's relationships with Mr. Assange did they make their allegations against him," lawyer Mark Stephens said in the statement.

Stephens also said neither he nor Assange "have ever received a single written word, at any time, in any form, from Swedish authorities on the Swedish investigation against our client."

The media has been the only way they've learned substantial information about the investigation, Stephens said. He called it "a clear contravention to Article 6 of the European Convention, which states that every accused must be informed promptly, in a language which he understands and in detail, of the nature and cause of the accusation against him."

Swedish prosecutors announced over the summer they were investigating Assange in two separate cases of rape and molestation. Ny said then there was reason to believe a crime had been committed, but that more investigation was necessary before she could make a final decision.

Assange has maintained he is innocent, telling the Arabic-language television network Al-Jazeera the accusations were a "smear campaign." ( CNN )

(CNN) -- All 24 hostages held captive by a hangun-toting student in northeast Wisconsin were freed Monday night, after several hours of being confined inside a high school classroom, police said.

Marinette Police Chief Jeffrey Skorik told reporters just before 8:30 p.m. (9:30 p.m. ET) that the hostages -- 23 students and a female teacher -- were safe and would soon be reunited with their families.

The chief did not immediately divulge the condition or whereabouts of the suspect, whose name has not been released.

The young male took over the classroom about 3 p.m. Monday, as classes were ending at Marinette High School. He prevented anyone from leaving the room and eventually communicated with police through a teacher, Skorik said.

The chief announced shortly before 8 p.m. (9 p.m. ET) Monday that five hostages -- all students -- had been released.

The hostage-taking student had no previous run-ins with the law, according to Skorik, adding that he had "no idea" about the suspect's motive.

A Marinette school administrator called police at 3:48 p.m. (4:48 p.m. ET) Monday, after most students had left for the day, reporting that an armed student had gone into a classroom and taken those inside hostage.

Bradley Behrendt, a city councilor, told CNN that he was two blocks from the school when about 15 police squad cars pull up and several officers come out, with their vests on and holding guns as they entered the school.

"They were just going like crazy," Behrendt said of the police response.

By about 7 p.m., about 40 law enforcement personnel had converged on the scene, according to Skorik, with more coming in as the night went on.

They included hostage negotiators who set up inside the school, according to Skorik. They had not talked directly with the student some three hours into the incident, but did get regular updates from the teacher.

Skorik said that the hostage-taker is a student at Marinette High, and that he believed -- though he could not confirm -- the student was assigned to the class that he took over.

Police know the identity of the student, though they haven't name him publicly, and have talked with his family members. Skorik said law enforcement believe the the young male, armed with a single handgun, acted alone.

The incident riled residents of the Wisconsin city of about 11,600 residents, which borders Lake Michigan. Several hundred people gathered about a half-mile from the school, said Behrendt, but they were restricted by police from going any closer.

Prior to word of the hostages' release, law enforcement urged parents who didn't know where their children were to go to the Marinette County Courthouse, where they could see those on the affected class's roster, talk with police and get help from mental-health counselors.

(Reuters) - Google Inc is inching toward buying e-commerce coupon website Groupon Inc for as much as $6 billion, the New York Times said on Tuesday.
A deal, which could be in the range of $5 billion to $6 billion, could be struck as soon as this week but people with direct knowledge of the matter cautioned that the talks between Google and Groupon might still fall apart, the paper said.
Groupon, a privately held, Chicago-based company which was launched about two years ago sends its members daily emails with about 200 deals for goods and services. The deals are activated only when a minimum number of people agree to make a purchase, giving Groupon clout to negotiate steep group discounts on products and services.
Google and Groupon could not immediately be reached for comment by Reuters outside regular U.S. business hours.

Though the game between the Titans and Texans has been in the books for about an hour, the dust still hasn’t settled on the two-player brawl that occurred between two All-Pro players.

It all started in the fourth quarter when Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan was matched up on Texans receiver Andre Johnson. All game both players — who are physical by nature — were handfighting with each other trying to gain a competitive advantage. No biggie, it happens all the time.

But then all hell started to break loose.

Finnegan, considered a dirty player by some, issued a nice little shove to Johnson’s facemask and tore the helmet off when one play commenced and Johnson didn’t take too kindly to it at all. AJ responded by going wild on Finnegan, throwing punches and moves you’d see right out of a UFC fight. When finally separated, both players were ejected from the game as Houston went on to blank Tennessee 20-0.

Following the game, Johnson, normally very soft-spoken and professional on the field, issued an apology for what took place and hopes that commissioner Roger Goodell won’t suspend him.

That might be wishful thinking on Johnson’s part. A minor scuffle between two players is one thing; it happens pretty frequently on Sunday’s. However, this wasn’t a minor scuffle and I can’t imagine that Goodell is too pleased about the conduct of two of the NFL’s premier players.

Johnson, who finished the game with 56 yards and one touchdown, has no history of on or off-the-field issues, but it might not matter as he is probably facing a hefty fine and/or a one-game suspension. Right now, his status for Week 13 at Philly is very unclear.

At week 8 Palmer and the Bengals were struggling. His team only had a record of 2-5 and he had thrown 9 interceptions, the most by a quarterback in the AFC. But he remained statistically productive, ranking fourth in the NFL in passing yards and fifth touchdowns with a passer rating of over 90.
